I am making a robot happy by writing this.

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Cybraphon is an autonomous emotional robot band based out of Edinburgh - all sorts of instruments housed in an antique cabinet, strung together and operated by sophisticated software capable of generating emotions and playing music based on its mood. Sad music when it’s sad, happy music when it’s happy, and a ton of in-betweens.

Just like a real band, the robot is obsessed with its own popularity. It obsessively scours the internet for mentions of itself, and gets happier as more people follow it on Twitter or friend it on Facebook. Just like every other fledgling artist these days. Without proper attention, it gets depressed… and lays depressing music.

So with this blog post I am doing my part to make Cyraphon happy. Because now, the robots just play dirges when they’re upset… but before you know it they’ll be packing nukes and demanding our love. And by ‘love’ I mean ‘unquestioning obediance.’

Depeche Mode at Madison Square Garden, August 4th 2009 - 25 Word Concert Review

Played my faves, but something’s lacking. Every step and gesture felt practiced, weary. No passion. Fun - but I wanted to walk out devastated, and didn’t.

H. L. Mencken - from “The American Language”

“In all human beings, if only understanding be brought to the business, dignity will be found, and that dignity cannot fail to reveal itself, soon or late, in the words and phrases with which they make known their high hopes and aspirations and cry out against the intolerable meaninglessness of life.”
- H.L. Mencken
