I went looking for whales in the Hudson River, the I went looking for whales in the Hudson River, the day after one was spotted here. Of course I didn't see any, but today the river - which is always enchanting - felt a little bit more full of magic.

Osage oranges evolved as ecological partners to Pleistocene megafauna. Mammoths or giant sloths ate the fruit and helped disperse the seeds. 

It's too big for any contemporary animal to eat. But it's still here, waiting for the mammoths to come back.
